What is Gabapentin?

Gabapentin, often known by the brand name Neurontin, is a prescription medication primarily classified as an anticonvulsant and analgesic. Originally developed to treat epilepsy, it is now widely prescribed to manage and relieve neuropathic pain, restless legs syndrome, and various types of nerve-related discomfort.

Unlike standard over-the-counter painkillers, Gabapentin works by altering the way the body's nerves send messages to the brain, effectively calming hyperactive nerves to reduce the sensation of pain.

Dosage & Precautions

It is critical to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not alter your dose or suddenly stop taking Gabapentin without consulting your doctor, as sudden withdrawal can cause complications or increased seizure frequency in epileptic patients.

• Routine: Gabapentin can be taken with or without food. If you are taking half a tablet, consume the other half at your next scheduled dose.
• Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
• Antacids: Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours before or after you take Gabapentin, as they can make it harder for your body to absorb the medication.

Most Common Side Effects:
